Here’s a scary statistic—six out of ten Americans have at least one chronic disease (such as diabetes, heart disease, depression, or Alzheimer’s). Four out of ten have two of these. But how do we go from “at risk” to having a more youthful and vibrant life? Can you actually age backwards?

Where to begin? Your overall health is built on the foundation of several things you do each day— nutrition, sleep, movement, stress. It’s all connected.

Nutrition is Key

Nutrition is one of the best tools to use when it comes to getting to the root cause of your symptoms and improving your overall health.

What you put on your plate can have a big impact on your overall health and wellness.

Healthy Food Habits:

  • Eliminate sugar, artificial sweeteners, and processed foods. Add in phytonutrients (chemical compounds produced by plants). Phytonutrients have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties to keep us healthy.
  • Eat the rainbow. Add brightly colored fruits and vegetables from the produce section, your local farmers’ market, or your backyard garden to your plate. Each color of fruits and vegetables is packed with the different nutrients our bodies need (resveratrol, flavonoids, carotenoids, glucosinolates, etc.).

Finding balance in our diet is important for our overall health. A great starting point is to make a realistic plan. Completely eliminating things we love doesn’t usually end well. Remember moderation is key.

At Del Negro Integrative Health, our Functional Medicine Certified Health Coach will personalize a nutritional plan tailored to you.

Quality Sleep

When it comes to good health, getting enough quality sleep (7-8 hours a night) is a non-negotiable. In fact, a study in 2021 by the National Institutes of Health, found that lack of sleep in your 50s and 60s increases dementia risk.

When we sleep, our bodies get rid of waste and “clean up the garbage”. Sleep is the repair system for the body – cells renew, hormones get balanced, blood sugar is regulated.

To keep your mind and body well, prioritize quality sleep. Set yourself up for success with healthy sleep habits.

Made to Move

Exercise and movement play a role in disease prevention and management.

Regular exercise doesn’t reduce your risk for a heart attack and lower cholesterol and blood pressure. It can also help balance hormones, improve digestion, and stabilize blood sugar.

Stress Management

Remember to take time to breathe. Give your body time to rest and recharge. Develop management tools and lifestyle habits that keep your stress in check.
